1970 Datsun 240zx Steering Systems and Catalytic Converters by Pete Daughtry

I was given my first car at age 16. As if that wasn't enough to claim spoiled status, the car was a 1972 Datsun 240zx, 6cylinder, 5speed transmission, with rack and pinion steering. It was so light, my girlfriend and I could lift the front end of it up and over parking blocks and curbs (don't ask how or why we needed to do this). The engine had been rebuilt, the carburetor was new, the interior was re-upholstered leather, and the real cherry wood steering wheel looked and felt amazing!

The more I bragged about this little gem the more I realized that I had no idea what rack and pinion steering was - other than it involved a rack Autel Maxivideo MV101, and probably a pinion too. But like parking in between the lines and staying off the curb didn't quench my need for more, knowing the name but not the entire function of my beauty's steering did not make me too happy.

Nowadays you can hop online, type a sentence or a question into Google and there's your list of topics and answers. Choose the one you like, verify the information with another and you're usually good to go. But not back then. Back then, we did things the hard way. We actually did them. Popping open my hood was always a joy. The engine was clean the hoses were new and everything was shiny and beautiful - except for the steering components. The rack was there, the pinion was there (okay, I looked at the Haynes auto repair manual while identifying!) and it was old, but still fully intact and spot on functional.

I later came to find out that it is one of the most accurate types of steering available, due to its simplicity and design, there are only two gears engaged taking your steering wheel turn and translating it to the push/pull of your tie rods ds708 update price. The wheel didn't autocorrect for steering malfunction (hence the parking block incident), but it put you exactly where you told it to go. And it never slipped, which was great - except I couldn't blame my steering when I slid off the ice into the snow on the side of the road.

Everyone has probably heard of a catalytic converter. For the longest time growing up, I assumed people were saying "Cadillac" converter, and so I just thought it was a special part found on Cadillacs. Don't laugh. It's nice to know too that it's not "chester drawers" you put your clothes in. It's "chest of drawers" - which actually makes a lot more sense.

But when I did discover that this catalytic converter appeared on more than just Cadillacs, I started to wonder what it was exactly. By a quick word analysis (okay, maybe I'm the only one who does this), it would seem it has something to do with catalysts - you know, the stuff that makes reactions start and/or go faster. And like chest of drawers, the name does correlate with the function in this case as well.

The catalytic converter is responsible for converting (how about that - a converter converts!) harmful emissions from your car's exhaust process into environmentally harmless ones. Specifically it works with hydrocarbons - which are basically just unburned gasoline molecules, carbon monoxide - what we think of as exhaust, the extra after the burning of gas, and nitrous oxides - which are formed during the combustion phase of gasoline ignition.

Amazing! Say goodbye to greenhouse gases, right? Well, almost - not really. The catalytic converter does change carbon monoxide (poisonous to oxygen breathing things) into carbon dioxide, but it does nothing to fix the carbon - so there is still carbon emissions, which are responsible for the greenhouse effect. So it may make them safer for humans and animals trapped in a garage with a running vehicle, it doesn't totally save us from being trapped on a planet with fuel burning processes still pumping carbon into the atmosphere. Another thing is, they aren't on every vehicle, and the car certainly doesn't need one to run. Though, if you do any garage maintenance with the door shut - you should probably make sure yours in present and in good working order!

Reduce tire wear way do not let it advance lay-off

Tires on a car belonging to consumables, and depth "kiss" with rough roads every day, natural wear and tear is inevitable thing, after a period of time it must be replaced. But some abnormal wear will shorten the life of the tire, let it lay off in advance, and sometimes you can find the car hidden fault from tire wear. But how to drive in order to reduce tire wear? The following summarize the eight points, wish can help you.

1, don't start the car too fast, so as to avoid dragging the ground and accelerated tire tread wear;

2, vehicle downhill should be based on the slope size, length and road conditions, vehicle speed control appropriate, avoid or less use the emergency brake to reduce tire wear;

3, vehicle curve should be based on road turning, turning radius, deceleration generally appropriate to avoid due to the inertial force and the centrifugal force autel maxisys mini, unilaterally accelerate tire wear;

4, on the uneven road traffic, first should choose the road, hitting the tire and the road surface to reduce, avoid damage to parts and tires, two to slow amble to avoid tire bumps and strong vibrations;

5, In the corner the car will overtake, through the intersection, narrow roads, railway crossings and other locations, should have an appropriate speed and pay attention to the road, pedestrians, vehicle dynamics, ready to brake, reducing braking frequently and avoid emergency braking Autel Autolink AL439, thus reducing tire wear;

6, When the road construction sites and road maintenance, the application of low- road approach to amble through choice, to avoid unduly hitting the tire, or even being stabbed or scratched;

7, through muddy lots, should choose a more solid and does not slip through the place, so as not to tire subsidence, standing idle, causing severe vibration and tire sidewall serious cuts, scratches;

8, vehicle parking and transit station parking should develop safe taxiing habits.

Long-time don’t use vehicle need note 5 maintenance tips

Long-suspended cars subject to the technical condition of the various assemblies and institutions gradually deteriorate, because of atmospheric corrosion, even resulting in loss of their technical performance. To mitigate this adverse effect, the car owner should be often do necessary maintenance work to make the long-suspended cars in a good performance status.

1, prevent rusting metal

Corrosion is mainly due to air moisture, oxygen and corrosive substances. Therefore, the long suspended cars; metal surfaces should be kept clean. Vehicles parked inside the garage should be kept ventilated; the air relative humidity is maintained at 70% or less. Also need for timely removal the dust, dirt and water in the car. In easily corroded parts and surfaces should be coated with oil, grease or bandaged with greaseproof paper autel maxiscan ms609. The pores on each assembly mechanism should be sealed to prevent air, water and dust from entering the interior.

2, prevent aging of rubber products

The rubber products in the cars, such as tires, belts, and a dust cover, etc., often aging or the shape expansion occurs, resulting in deterioration of the performance, use life span becomes short.

Plastic and rubber products aging mainly due to the rubber polymer are unsaturated hydrocarbons, easy absorb the oxygen in the air then oxidation, and vulcanized rubber have gas permeability, oxygen easy access to the internal then oxidation. Especially in direct sunlight can induce rapid aging of rubber. Rubber products after gasoline and oil contamination will lead to volume expansion ds708 update price, gum lose elasticity decreases.

Rubber products to prevent aging, should avoid direct sunlight and contact with mineral oil.

3, prevent gasoline antiknock performance degradation

Gasoline antiknock performance is determined by the octane gasoline level. Car long suspended, gasoline octane number will be decrease with the increase of component loss and colloid content decreases, making it antiknock performance decreases. Thus, gasoline tank need to tightly closed, and avoid overheating. Gasoline storage time is best not to be too long.

4, prevent cotton products and carpets mildew, etc.

It is easy to absorb moisture. Especially in humid areas and rainy season, more damp mildew. So the car owners to deal with regular checks of cotton products, timely dry, keep dry.

5, always check the working condition of the engine

At least once a month to start the engine, idling functioning 4-5min, check the engine. If it have abnormal phenomenon need timely adjustment and maintenance.

A Press Auto Repair Manual timely maintenance updates cars

Every car , the owner will have to get after buying a maintenance manual, this manual will remind owners that much time on car maintenance time Autolink AL439 Scanner, how long for some accessories, how long to fully inspect the vehicle once, if the owner is in strict accordance with requirement to do so, your car will significantly increase the life.

Two Important bolts inspected once every six months

Car in the conservation process need to pay attention to detail in all aspects. Master Wang introduced, ordinary family sedan is 3 months or 5,000 km maintenance time. But many owners take into account the actual cost, no scheduled maintenance. In this case, the owners need to pay attention more parts of the maintenance cycle. For some drum hand brake shoe clearance and wheel brake wear, abrasion marks should be replaced if it reaches the brake shoe, as well as important bolt fixing of the chassis, even if the distance traveled by the vehicle does not meet maintenance miles, but more than six months maintenance cycle, it should go check it.

Three of vehicle tires shall be checked once a month

Only timely maintenance vehicles can reduce wear and avoid failure to ensure performance autel maxisys pro. Automotive vehicles such as the appearance of the lamp and mirror, before starting the vehicle owners pay attention to what can be observed. If the tire is worn token, you need to carefully examine the owners and check the tires have no bulges, cracks and other conditions of aging. Check the tire is usually checked once a month, if the vehicle is in motion, and foreign body sensation tire hit occurs, you need to immediately check. When checking the tires, check the vehicle chassis to take into account there is no oil, but also in the vehicle after the shift, parked on the ground to see whether the original oil traces, if any, you need to conduct a comprehensive inspection and maintenance.

Extend the life of the vehicle usually rely on, as long as you drive is a good grasp of a degree, maintenance on a regular basis, do not often in complex road, there are special reminders, do not idle the vehicle for a long time, because of prolonged inactivity auto parts will be aging more fast, especially batteries vulnerable, but also easily lead to oil oxidation, rubber aging.

What Happens When You Put Sugar in a Gas Tank

What Happens When You Put Sugar in a Gas Tank? Just about everyone has heard of the notion that putting sugar in a gas tank will destroy a car engine. But is it really true? While putting sugar in a car's gas tank won't always destroy an engine autel ds708, it can cause some major damage and, in most instances, cause the victimized car to stall and require major Happens to the Sugar? Sugar is a scourge to car engines because it doesn't dissolve in gasoline. This means sugar poured into a gas tank will get sucked into the fuel lines and begin clogging up a vital part or parts of your engine's fuel system. It can disable the fuel filter, the fuel pump and the fuel injectors, depending on how much sugar is loaded into a gas tank and where it accumulates. Wherever it ends up, the sticky ball of sugar will block the fuel flow and cause your engine to stall and not start again. And once a mechanic takes the engine apart, repairs can be expensive, especially if the sugar reaches your carburetor or fuel injectors. You'll also need your fuel tank emptied and cleaned and your fuel lines flushed out or replaced. So while sugar won't exactly destroy an engine, it can destroy parts of your engine that are expensive. Not surprisingly, the sugar-in-the-gas-tank tactic was developed in the early 20th century as a guerrilla war tactic to disable enemy Exceptions to the Rule There are cases where sugar can completely ruin an engine Autel Maxivideo MV201. If enough sugar gets by the filter, pumps and fuel injectors, it can get into the engine itself, and build up in the valves and piston rings. Once there, it will eventually harden into a mess that will require a complete engine overhaul or a new engine. But the chances of that happening to new car models is slim because most cars today have sophisticated fuel filter systems designed to catch contaminants and prevent them from reaching the engine. The bottom line is that putting sugar in a gas tank really can cause some damage. The only variable is how much damage it causes.

Tips to keep your car tires cool amid damaging summer heat

Tips to keep your car tires cool amid damaging summer heat Record heat has raised more than temperatures this summer, as the nation struggles to retain its cool. Just as heat takes its toll on people and electric bills, it also impacts car reliability and safety. By some accounts, tire blowouts are on the rise, creating dangers for travelers. But you can reduce this risk, if you follow some simple maintenance example, just having your tires properly inflated will go a long way to avoiding such failures. Tire pressure is the life-blood of any tire; An under-inflated tire generates more heat due to excessive sidewall flexing, adversely effecting handling and fuel economy Autel MaxiDiag MD703. Also, the tires will wear out weather exacerbates heat build-up and weakens the tire, potentially leading to abrupt and sometime catastrophic failure. On a hot 90-degree day at our track, surface temperatures easily exceed 150-degrees. Think about what your tires are experiencing while you're enjoying the drive in a cool air-conditioned correct air pressure will help keep your tires' temperature down within the serviceable range. The key here is using the correct inflation pressure. Based on our experience and a number of industry surveys, most tires are not inflated correctly. Those that are under-inflated are typically the result of no or infrequent pressure checks. However, some consumers go the other way when they over-inflate their tires using the sidewall rating-that's the maximum pressure and the not service pressure as defined by the vehicle manufacturer, which is typically listed on a driver's door jamb get the optimal performance out of your tires, we suggest you follow these simple steps:1. Check the inflation pressure in each tire (and the spare) when the tires are cold or have sat more than three hours. 2. Inflate the tires to the recommended setting outlined on the tire information placard found most often on the driver's door jamb and/or the vehicle owner's manual. 3. Check the tires monthly. Tires will typically lose up to 1 psi per month, and pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10-degree drop in air temperature Autel VAG505 Scanner. 4. Buy a good tire gauge. It's also a good idea to buy a portable compressor that works off of your car's power outlet; these are available in many auto parts stores. (See our tire pressure gauge ratings.) 5. Tires also lose air to common punctures, so if you find you're always adding air to one particular tire, it might have a slow leak. Have it checked out at a service these tips and you and your tires can stay cool through the remainder of the summer.

Fall season should be timely and comprehensive maintenance to the car

Fall season should be timely and comprehensive maintenance to the car
Summer in the past to deal with car cleaning
"After a long period of use, inside carpets, flooring, cushions and other items as well as the corners of the car may be covered with dust because of the summer regular window ventilation, smell the dust generated is easily diluted." Engaged automotive beauty industry for many years, Experts said, "Once the weather turns cooler windows closed, the air inside will become cloudy, odors and bacteria would constitute a human health hazard."
Expert's proposal, the owner of the car in the season should conduct a thorough sweep. If you do not want to go to a professional maintenance organization, or you can do it yourself clean. First with a vacuum cleaner around the car dust and small debris sucked out, and then wipe clean towel. In selecting the cleaners, be sure to choose the product does not contain volatile solvents. Otherwise, once the cleanup is not clean, after sun exposure after the phenomenon of plastic parts are prone to cracking MaxiTPMS TS501 Scanner. Of course if conditions allow, or should choose to go to a professional organization for the vehicle to do a steam sauna, photo catalytic disinfection professional cleaning methods.
Select the appropriate oil cost savings
According to senior automotive engineer Mr. Jiang introduced seasonal maintenance time, pay special attention to questions about the concentration of automotive oil. Because oil viscosity with temperature change, the viscosity becomes high in winter autel, summer, the viscosity becomes low. So there are changes in temperature, when the weather is cold, you can use lower viscosity oil.
"Choose they own vehicle oil can not only extend the life of the engine, but also to save fuel. Some advanced synthetic motor oil, in addition to protect the engine, reducing the number of oil changes, but also can save fuel costs."
Larger temperature difference between day and night in autumn, likely to cause slippery road surfaces. Only by maintaining adequate tire friction degree in order to ensure traffic safety. So, autumn should check the tire tread wear. Mr. Jiang suggested that if the tire treads depth less than 1.6mm should be replaced with new tires.
"For the front-wheel drive vehicle, you should try to patch over the rear tire change to use, and more than three times a tire repair should be replaced, must not be used for a long time at high speed." Mr. Jiang said that in the weather when cold, the rubber will be a certain degree of hard and brittle, this feature will cause the rubber to reduce the coefficient of friction of the tire is more prone to leakage, punctures phenomenon, even new replacement tires, but also often the tire surface pattern of debris clean up, check whether there are scratches, the phenomenon of drum kits to ensure driving safety.

Don't Fall For These Auto Repair Tricks

Don't Fall For These Auto Repair Tricks Don't waste money by succumbing to these five upsells Many of us rely on our cars for some of the most important day-to-day tasks. If something goes wrong,it can be a very scary and stressful experience. Some -- not all,of course -- unscrupulous mechanics prey on that fear in order to make unnecessary repairs that drivers don't need. Watch out for these five unnecessary repairs and upsells the next time you take your car in for service. 1. Flat tire replacement Most flat tires are caused by screws,nails or other sharp metal objects penetrating the tire. When you get a flat,it's important to mount a spare and take the damaged tire in to a local tire shop. Be wary when the salesman tries to sell you a brand new tire or pair of tires. Most flats can be repaired with a simple $20 patch,so always inquire about a repair before agreeing to an expensive replacement. 2. Radiator coolant replacement When you take your car in for a routine oil change,sometimes the mechanic will recommend that you also replace your radiator coolant. Radiator coolant is simply water mixed with antifreeze,and it doesn't degrade in the same way as oil. Unless your coolant is contaminated or hasn't been replaced in 100,000 miles,don't fall for this common upsell. 3."Preventative"oil replacement Modern cars don't require very frequent oil changes ds708 update price,and modern lubricants last much longer than they used to. If you have a newer car that requires synthetic oil,you can go as long as 15,000 miles between oil changes. Before agreeing to come back for another change in 3 Autolink AL319 Scanner,000 miles,check your owner's manual. Changing your oil prematurely is wasteful and unnecessary. 4. Unnecessary air filter replacement Your car's air filter should only be replaced when it's clogged with dust and grime. Your mechanic should visually inspect the old filter and determine if your car is due for a replacement. Visual inspection on most cars only takes a minute,and shouldn't cost extra. If a mechanic tells you that it's time for a replacement,ask to see the old filter and inspect it for trapped debris. If the mechanic tells you to replace the filter before he's even examined it,chances are it's a typical unnecessary upsell. 5. Overpriced replacement parts Most auto repair quotes will have a labor component and a parts component. Repair shops make money by performing the necessary labor,and also by marking up the parts. When your mechanic gives you a repair estimate,ask how much the labor costs and how much the parts cost. If the parts are a major cost component,you can always compare prices with your local auto parts store. Since few consumers ask about part costs or know what's reasonable,unscrupulous mechanics often profit from consumers' ignorance.

Cooling System Auto Maintenance

Cooling System Auto Maintenance Categories: My Car It is recommended that a seven (7)-point preventative cooling system maintenance check be performed at least once every two years. Consult your vehicle owners manual for specific auto guidelines. This inspection is designed to identify areas that need attention,and consists of: * a visual inspection of all cooling system components,including belts and hoses * a radiator cap pressure test to check for the recommended system pressure level * a thermostat check for proper opening and closing * a pressure test to identify any external leaks to the cooling system parts;including the radiator,water pump,engine coolant passages,radiator and heater hoses and heater core * an internal leak test to check for combustion gas leakage into the cooling system * an engine cooling fan test for proper operation Cooling System Operation Antifreeze/Coolant The main function of the Cooling System is to carry heat away from the engine and maintain the desired operating temperature. This is accomplished by circulating antifreeze/coolant through the engine,where heat is generated,and carrying it to the radiator to be cooled.The temperature of the coolant can sometimes reach 250 to 275 F (121 to 135 C). Even with antifreeze added,these temperatures would boil the coolant. To prevent this,the cooling system is pressurized,which further raises the boiling point of the coolant. Most systems have around 14 to 15 pounds per square inch (psi),which raises the boiling point approximately 45 F so the coolant can endure the high temperatures produced in the engine. Coolant Hoses The radiator hoses and heater hoses are easily inspected by opening the hood and looking. You want to be sure that the hoses have no cracking or splitting and that there is no bulging or swelling at the ends. If there are any signs of problems,the hose should be replaced with the correct part number for the year,make,model and engine of the vehicle. Never use a universal hose unless it is an emergency and a proper molded hose is not available. For either the radiator hoses or the heater hoses,make sure that you route the replacement hose in the same way that the original hose was running Autel Autolink AL539. Position the hose away from any obstruction that can possibly damage it and always use new hose clamps. After the cooling system is refilled with the proper coolant mixture,a pressure test should be performed to ensure that there are no leaks. Belts On most older vehicles,the water pump is driven by either a V belt or serpentine belt on the front of the engine that is also responsible for driving the alternator autel maxiscan,power steering pump and air conditioner compressor. These types of belts are easy to inspect and replace if they are worn. Check for dry cracking on the inside surface of the belt. On newer vehicles,the water pump is often driven by the timing belt. This belt usually has a specific life expectancy at which time it must be replaced to insure that it does not fail. Since the timing belt is inside the engine and will require partial engine disassembly to inspect,it is very important to replace the timing belt at the scheduled interval. Things to watch for * Check antifreeze/coolant level monthly. Only use a 50/50 solution of anti-freeze/coolant and water. * Water quality plays an important role in protecting the cooling system. A high mineral content may cause scaling or corrosion. Deionized or distilled water should be used in 50/50 solution * CAUTION: Do not remove the radiator pressure cap when the engine is HOT. * Inspect belts monthly. Replace belts that are worn,frayed or glazed. Adjust belts when more than 1/2 inch can be depressed between the pulleys. * Belts with spring-loaded tensioners do not require manual adjustments. * Replace bulging,rotten,or brittle hoses and tighten hose clamps. If a hose looks bad or feels too soft or too hard,it should be replaced.

Car steering system

Car steering system Steering system allows the driver to control the direction of the vehicle by turning the front wheels. It is designed according to the use requirements of the vehicle and can be either in single or multi-axle design Autolink AL439 Scanner. Apart from its control over direction of travel,it also provides control of good maneuverability,smooth recovery from turns,and minimum transmission of road shocks. We have manual and power steering systems,and now power steering is standard equipment on nearly every vehicle. Manual steering's only energy source comes from the force a drive applying to the steering wheel while on a power steered one the driver's effort is assisted by other pressure from manmade device. Thus,power steering systems can be classified into hydraulic power steering and electronic power steering. Hydraulic power steering generates oil pressure in the pump with the engine's output. Electric power steering eliminates the power steering pump,does away with fluid leaks and the need to check the power steering fluid MaxiDiag Elite MD702. It has replaced hydraulic power steering in many new vehicles today. Concerning its designs,Power steering systems can be further divided into rack and pinion types and pitman arm. Amongst,the rack and pinion is probably the most common one you'll find in any car today due to its relative simplicity and low cost. It gives a much better feel for the driver,and there isn't the slop or slack associated with steering box pitman arm type systems. Usually,a basic steering system has 4 main parts-a steering wheel handling the steering operation,a steering column joining the steering wheel and the steering gears,the steering linkage connecting the steering box to the wheel assemblies at the front wheels and steering gears converting the steering torque and rotational deflection from the steering wheel and transmitting them to the wheel through the steering linkage to make the vehicle turn. Maintenance of the steering system consists of regular inspection,lubrication,and adjusting components to compensate for wear. Here are some procedures you can follow to maintain your steering system: checking and adjusting power steering fluid,the manufacturer has specified an optimum level of the power steering fluid you can consult; pressure testing a power steering system,always follow manufacturers or equipment manufacturers procedure when working on the system; flushing a power steering system; inspecting and adjusting an engine drive belt; servicing a steering system and servicing wheel bearings.

Car Air Conditioning Repair-Troubleshooting

Car Air Conditioning Repair: Troubleshooting What is "Black Death"? If you're about to go to bed and want to avoid nightmares,you might want to put off reading this until morning. If you're about to get in the car,please read on. While Black Death is not the same as the deadly plague during the 14th century,a car A/C system experiencing Black Death will be infected like the plague. Black Death starts out inside the compressor after refrigerant breaks down. Since refrigerant acts as a working fluid much like how motor oil is the fluid which provides lubrication to protect the engine,a refrigerant breakdown will result in ugly wear,starting in the compressor.Unfortunately,if a leak has been affecting your cold air for a while,moisture will most likely have entered your A/C system and may have damaged other vital and expensive parts. Stay cool. The A/C starts out cool then starts getting warm,what's happening? Well,like many complicated stories,there's never one simple answer Autolink AL609 Scanner. A/C systems are a fickle breed. Your best bet is to have us inspect your system for any of the following listed symptoms. From cold to hot and all the symptoms in between: The clogged expansion valve: The expansion valve distributes the proper amount of refrigerant to your evaporator maxidiag md802. If the valve is blocked,the refrigerant can't flow into the evaporator.Moisture is the kiss of death for your A/C system,mixing with refrigerant and creating a system destroying corrosive acid. Quick fact: If moisture is present,it could damage your accumulator,receiver or drier. Remember,these devices are responsible for removing moisture from the A/C system and will eventually stop functioning once they are exposed to an open system (leak or crack).

Avoiding Winter Woes-10 Vehicle Maintenance Tips

Avoiding Winter Woes: 10 Vehicle Maintenance Tips Mike Oliveira wrote this post on Dec 09,2014 at 06:05 am Auto maintenance is a year-round concern,but extra caution is required in those parts of the country where winter brings freezing temperatures,heavy snows and hazardous driving conditions. Here are 10 vehicle maintenance issues that are more common in cold weather-and some helpful tips. 1. Tire Traction One of the worst feelings you can have behind the wheel is when the tires start sliding on an icy road,affecting your ability to control the car. A switch to snow tires is one way to avoid that slippery sensation. But if you're going to chance it on your current tires,at least make sure they have sufficient tread,are free of significant wear or damage,and are inflated to the correct pressure. Don't forget to check the spare as well. 2. Windshield Wipers Your wipers are the key to maintaining adequate visibility while driving in heavy rain or snow. It's an easy and cheap repair,so why not do replace them every year before wear becomes an issue? And whether the blades are new or old,avoid sliding them across an icy windshield,as this will damage the rubber. Use LOCTITE Dielectric Grease as a battery terminal protector. And it doesn't hurt to have an auto club like AAA on speed-dial. 4. Radiator Check your antifreeze to keep the radiator from freezing,which can result in a very costly repair bill. Also check the hoses that are connected to the radiator to make sure the rubber is in good condition and leak-free. LOCTITE 565? Thread Sealant is a high performance sealant ideal for application to threaded coolant lines and fitting. 5. Lights You would notice right away if a headlight burns out,but a malfunctioning fog light,turn signal or back-up light can go unnoticed for weeks. Windshield While you're checking the windshield wipers,make sure the windshield itself is free of cracks. LOCTITE Windshield and Glass Sealer can find cracks and seal them off from harsh conditions until a permanent repair or a replacement can be made. The sealant is durable,waterproof and can withstand extreme temperatures. Use an ice scraper instead of your wipers to clear the windshield after it snows. 9. Truck Maintenance: Fluid Check As winter approaches,checking and changing your fluids is a must. Make sure you change your oil,power steering,transmission,transfer case,and differential fluids. Reference your vehicle's maintenance guide to see if switching to synthetics could be helpful to you. Synthetics tend to flow better at colder temperatures. 10. Motorcycle Maintenance: Parts Coating Motorcycle maintenance requires some additional precautions that auto maintenance does not,especially since many of the engine parts that receive some protection from the hood of a car are exposed to the elements on a bike. Coating these parts with oil (also known as "fogging the engine") can help keep them running,or protect them if you plan to store your motorcycle for the winter. To complete this task correctly,remove the air filter first,and spray the parts outdoors,as the process can cause a lot of smoke.

What Goes Wrong With Cars

What Goes Wrong With Cars,and When copyright Owning and driving a car involves two things most motorists would rather avoid: spending money on maintenance and spending money on repairs. If you do not maintain your car (meaning regular oil changes,filter replacements and keeping an eye on critical fluid levels),you will be faced with major repairs much sooner than you should.What Goes Wrong (and When) Battery . . After 4 or 5 years (regardless of mileage) most batteries are getting weak and need to be replaced. In hot climates like Arizona and New Mexico,three years is about all the heat most batteries can take. Absorbant Glass Mat (AGM) gel-cell type batteries typically last up to a year or two longer than conventional wet cell lead-acid batteries,so you might consider buying one of these when you replace the battery. Replacement cost for a new battery: $60 to $140 depending on the type and brand purchased.Most OHC timing belts sell for $50 or less,but installation labor can be expensive depending on the application and how difficult it is to change the belt autel maxiscan. Figure $400 to $800 to replace a timing belt for normal maintenance,and several thousands dollars for repairs if the belt is not replaced,and it breaks and damages the valves. Automatic Transmission This is one repair vehicle owners fear most,and rightly so. Nobody repairs transmissions anymore. They replace them with remanufactured transmissions.After 10 to 12 years of service,many original equipment hoses,seals and weatherstripping can start to leak. Keeping a vehicle in a garage will reduce the exposure to ultraviolet light and ozone which ages rubber,and may expend the life a few more years. But eventually,many rubber parts on well cared for garaged vehicles will deteriorate and fail. Engine parts made out of plastic can also become brittle and crack with age. This includes plastic intake manifolds,valve covers and oil pans. Other plastics that deteriorate with age include plastic fuel tanks,and plastic facias,bumper covers,body and interior trim,and dash covers,and plastics used in upholstery.

Vehicle Lights and Wipers-The Keys to See and Be Seen

Vehicle Lights and Wipers: The Keys to See and Be Seen October 7,2014 See and Be Seen- Lights and Wipers Safety TipsAs the days get shorter,lights and wipers play a major role in safe driving,as the chance of an accident increases if you can't see or be seen,according to the non-profit Car Care Council. "With fewer daylight hours in fall and winter,it's important to make sure your vehicle's lights and wipers are working properly so your visibility is not compromised and you can be seen by others," said Rich White,executive director,Car Care Council. "From the driver's seat,you may not notice a light that isn't working autel,so inspect all of your car's lights and replace those that are out. Also,inspect and replace wiper blades so you can see clearly when wet weather hits." Lights are normal wear items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility;signals and alerts other drivers;and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle's interior. In addition to replacing dimming,rapidly blinking and non-functioning lights,the following tips can help keep you safe. Keep headlights,tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights from being seen by others. Make sure that your headlights are properly aimed. Misaimed headlights blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. If there is any doubt on whether or not your headlights should be on,turn them on. Don't overdrive your headlights;you should be able to stop inside the illuminated area,otherwise you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle. The wiper system keeps excessive water,snow and dirt from building up on the windshield,maintaining clear visibility. Many factors can accelerate the replacement interval of wipers,including operating conditions (winter conditions are tough on wiper blades),frequency of use,material and type of wipers and sunny weather. In fact,wiper blades can deteriorate faster and need more frequent replacement in desert states Autolink AL319 Scanner. Don't forget to check the rear window wiper blade too! "Some states have laws that require the headlights to be on with the wipers," said White. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the "Be Car Care Aware" consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care,maintenance and repair to consumers.

The convex mirror is typically small and comes with an adhesive backing for application on existing mirrors. Alternative Rear-view cameras have been growing in popularity in recent years. Rear-view cameras are on a closed circuit with a small screen located on the dashboard of the vehicle and offer a clear picture of objects that are otherwise unseen in rear-view mirrors. These are most commonly found on luxury cars and large recreational vehicles like motor homes. Warning Mirrors have a tendency of distorting images and can often mislead a driver of existing surroundings and not displaying every object that may be present. Always turn your head to double check blind spots when performing maneuvers like parking and changing lanes.
