Should You Wax or Polish Your Car? For car enthusiasts the art of proper car maintenance can be a lifelong obsession. It's interesting, then, that even among die-hard car-buffs there remains a strong argument regarding whether proper maintenance involves waxing your car, polishing your car, or doing both. The truth is, however, that both methods have a purpose and both are necessary at different times. Identification Waxing and polishing are two completely different procedures. These waxes tend to provide extremely good protection and shine, but their effects don't last as long as those of synthetic waxes. Abrasive polishes are generally graded based on how coarse they are, with finer polishes used for finer detail work. Every time you wash your car you should inspect it for scratches, rust or any other imperfections. Once you've found such problem areas they should be polished out using an appropriate polish product. The affected area should be waxed properly after polishing. Time Frame There's no exact formula for how often a car should be waxed, but it's a good idea to polish your car as soon as you notice any problems. Quick action will keep scratches and nicks from causing further rust damage to the vehicle. Cars should be waxed at least a couple of times a year, but more often is even better. You can't harm your car by waxing it often, as long as you follow the wax's instructions and use proper materials. Waxing provides protection and improved aesthetics. Also, remember to always wax your car after polishing it because abrasive polishes can strip wax away and make your vehicle vulnerable to damage and increased wear.
